New Delhi, (IANS) Big 92.7 FM’s Radio Jockey (RJ) Dheena has broadcast live on radio continuously for 168 hours and entered the Guinness Book of World Records, bettering the previous mark by 33 hours.

He is “ecstatic” after breaking the existing world record of 135 hours set by Italian RJ Stefano Venneri in 2007. Dheena began his on-air marathon Aug 21 at 5 a.m. that ended at 5 a.m. Thursday.

Though Dheena, who hosts “Big Vanakkam” on Big FM’s station at Chennai, broke Venneri’s record at 8:01 p.m. Tuesday itself, he continued on to set a new record which would be tough to break.

“I didn’t want to be a sprinter. I wanted to be like a marathon runner who would lead by hours and I have done that. I wanted the target to be very high so that for the next five to 10 years, no one should even think of attempting this,” Dheena told IANS over phone from Chennai.

This was not the first time Dheena attempted an on-air marathon. In August 2007, he had worked non-stop for 92 hours and seven minutes.

For his Guinness record, the FM station ensured all medical requirements for Dheena. A team of physicians was present to monitor his health.

“I used to get five minutes rest in every hour and after every 12 hours, I used to get an hour’s interval for myself. In that time, I used to take a nap. I kept eating something in between and that’s how I managed,” said Dheena, who joined Big FM in 2006.

Before taking on this challenge, Dheena prepared himself physically and mentally.

“I undertook rigorous yoga practice to boost my mental endurance and also went to the gym regularly to keep fit and be awake for so many hours,” he said.

Dheena is overwhelmed with the response of his listeners who gathered outside the Big FM office to meet him.

He said: “I have got a tremendous reaction from the people in Chennai and I have managed to get a huge fan following. They were constantly concerned about my health and me. It was really motivating. People across ages came over to meet me, called me and helped me through this feat.”

He says that the experience has taught him to be “patient, focussed and to concentrate with no sleep”.

Chennai, (IANS) Darsheel Safary, the boy who made you laugh and cry in his debut movie “Taare Zameen Par”, will now star in multilingual director Priyadarshan’s Hindi remake of an acclaimed Iranian film.

Priyadarshan’s film is a remake of the 1998 Iranian movie “Children of Heaven” that underlines a poignant relationship between siblings. The Indian version of the film will be released early next year and is expected to be shown in several foreign film festivals, a publicist told IANS Wednesday.

The actress to play Darsheel’s sister is yet to be chosen.

Meanwhile Priyadarshan’s forthcoming venture “Kanchipuram”, a celluloid diatribe against communism woven around the silk trade in Kanchipuram, 60 from Chennai, is scheduled to be shown at the Toronto Film Festival next month.

The director, known for his situational multi-star-cast comedies like “Bhool Bhulaiyaa”, “Garam Masala” and “Hera Pheri”, had told IANS earlier that he is branching out into meaningful cinema to fulfil a dream.

Film: “Chamku”
Music Director: Monty Sharma
Lyricist: Sameer
Singers: Shreya Ghoshal, Soumya Raoh, Kalpana, Parthiv Gohil, Shail, Anaida, Saleem Shahzada, Abhijeet Bhattacharya, Vaishali Samant and Richa Sharma
Rating: **

After the huge success of “Saawariya”, expectations were high from composer Monty Sharma’s next work. But sadly, the music of “Chamku” disappoints. The album has six tracks but none of them can be termed brilliant.

“Aaja milke” starts the album on a sweet note. A romantic number, it has been perfectly rendered by Shreya Ghoshal. Known for giving her best shot to romantic tracks, Shreya does a splendid job. The lyrics are impressive and go well with the music.

Richa Sharma croons the next track titled “Kithe Jawa”. Her voice is suitable for folk songs, but Monty Sharma makes her sing the number that is interspersed with Western influences. The song is just an average piece.

“Gola gola” continues with the rustic theme and is sung by Abhijeet Bhattacharya and Vaishali Samant. It isn’t a very interesting number.

Next is “Trance”. This track comes out of the blue and strikes you with its Western touch. Lyrics are nice and the music is quite heady and unheard of in Bollywood. But how popular this song by Soumya Raoh, Anaida and Saleem Shahzada will become is yet to be seen.

“Dukh ke badri” is another average song rendered by Parthiv Gohil, Shail and Kalpana. The lyrics have been penned by Sameer. This slow, sentimental track is quite avoidable.

On the whole, the “Chamku” album is unimpressive. Of all the songs, “Aaja Milke” can be termed the best, but otherwise, the album is really not recommended.

Ckkompany Music Review

Suddenly Tusshar Kapoor seems to be seen a lot more than what he used to till a few years back. He began the year with a guest appearance in Halla Bol, followed it up with an item song ‘Manzar’ in Sunday, tasted success with One Two Three and now would be seen in C Kkompany. While One Two Three also gave him a popular title song, one looks forward to what is in store for him in C Kkompany that primarily features four songs (two each by Anand Raaj Anand and Bappa Lahiri).

Set in a mood similar to that of the title track of One Two Three, ‘Khoka’ is a promotional number which kick starts the proceedings for C Kkompany. A fun song which heavily relies upon Western beats and arrangements, ‘Khoka’ is about the power of money which makes the world go round and how it aids in elevating the status of an individual.

Narrating the tale of the three protagonists in the film (Tusshar Kapoor, Anupam Kher and Rajpal Yadav) who turn from zeroes to heroes, the Shabbir Ahmed written ‘Khoka’ is a foot tapping number that has Mika Singh in the lead. Composed by Bappa Lahiri who also ropes in his Dad Bhappi Lahiri and sister Rema Lahiri to give Mika company behind the mikes. ‘Khoka’ qualifies as a time-pass enjoyable number which only sounds better after repeated listening. And for those looking for a Club outing, there is always a faster ‘remix version’.

To fill in the album with a much mandated Punjabi outing, ‘Speaker Baje’ follows next which may not be an extraordinary composition providing something out of the box, but nevertheless does well in keeping the racy mood of the album intact. A bona fide item number which has Celina Jaitley matching steps along with Tusshar Kapoor, ‘Speaker Baje’ (which also appears in a ‘Dhol Mix’ version) is a lavishly shot Bhangra-pop number, which has in it to force an individual to hit the dance floor. While Anand Raaj Anand plays the triple role of a composer, lyricist and singer, Sunidhi Chauhan is roped in for this song which is an out and out Punjabi outing.

The album takes an interesting turn with the title song ‘C Kkompany’ that has none other than Sanjay Dutt coming behind the mike. A song that introduces each of the three prime characters of the film, ‘C Kkompany’, is set in a mode which reminds listener of the kind of music which Pritam has been making for last couple of years and consistently delivering hits. Aided by some simple yet funny lyrics by Anand Raaj Anand (who also composes the song), ‘C Kkompany’ that has passages in Hindi as well as English, should make for a good viewing on the screen. A song which has Sanjay Dutt singing in his trademark dark style, ‘C Kkompany’ has a foot tapping ‘remix version’ to boast as well.

After three promotional/item numbers in a row, ‘C Kkompany’ offers some variety with a love song ‘Jaane Kya’ that arrives in the end. Bappa Lahiri and Shabbir Ahmed add a young touch to ‘Jaane Kya’ which instantly makes one remember Atif Aslam’s recent hits like ‘Bakhuda’ [Kismat Konnection] and ‘Pehli Nazar Mein’ [Race]. A romantic outing which has dependable singers like K.K. and Shreya Ghoshal coming together, all that this number (which has a good mix of rhythm and melody) needs is a good promotion which would take it closer to the audience.

‘C Kkompany’ is a decent album which, at the least aids in keeping a lively mood throughout its duration. The songs by Anand Raaj Anand and Bappa Lahiri are not exceptional though, but they are still good enough to ensure that there is not a single dull moment in the album. A fine time-pass affair.

Together, Salman Khan and Sajid-Wajid have delivered multiple hits in films like Partner, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Tere Naam, Hum Tumhare Hai Sanam, Tumko Na Bhool Payenge, Hello Brother and Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya. With their 10 year association continuing to go strong, the trio now comes together for God Tussi Great Ho which also stars Priyanka Chopra and Sohail Khan. Jalees Sherwani and Shabbir Ahmed write the lyrics.

It’s time to revisit ‘It’s The Time To Disco’ [Kal Ho Na Ho] with ‘Let’s Party’, the opening number of the album. With a similar setting, sound arrangements and even rendition, ‘Let’s Party’ takes off exactly from where the aforementioned disco number left a few years back. The only difference here is that this time around, Salman Khan and Priyanka Chopra share the stage instead of Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta.

The only difference here is that this time around, Salman Khan and Priyanka Chopra share the stage instead of Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta.

A slightly better composition is ‘Tujhe Aksa Beach Ghuma Du’ which surprisingly has visuals quite similar to that of the title track of Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. This time round, Sohail Khan replaces Akshay Kumar in a number where he gets into constant bickering with Salman Khan over Priyanka Chopra! Crooned by Wajid himself with Amrita Kak giving him good company, the song has good fun quotient to itself, with some funny lyrics by Shabbir Ahmed that keeps the momentum going for it. In fact for this song, the ‘remix version’ takes quite an impressive beginning (reminding of the theme tune that went along ‘Apni To Jaise Taise’ - Laawaris) while keeping the feet tapping for those 4 minutes.

Finally arrives what could well be termed as a favorite for Sajid-Wajid and Salman Khan! Amongst them, they have a thing or two for a ‘chunari’ and this is pretty much apparent in the song ‘Lal Chunariya’. The best part about this Deven Shukla written song is the coming together of Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik, which seems to be happening after ages! A melodious romantic number which can never go out of fashion as long as Bollywood lives on, ‘Lal Chunariya’ has a feel and impact similar to countless such songs that Sajid-Wajid have composed for Salman in films like Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, Tere Naamand Mujhse Shaadi Karogi.

God Tussi Great Ho doesn’t quite boast of a great beginning with ‘Let’s Party’ not really making a great impression. However things improve slightly with ‘Tujhe Aksa Beach Ghuma Du’. Though this effort too isn’t enticing enough, the concluding tracks in the form of ‘Tumko Dekha’ and ‘Lal Chunariya’ do help in redeeming God Tussi Great Ho to an extent. Overall, this soundtrack by Sajid-Wajid may not really scale the kind of height as some of their earlier albums with Salman Khan have, but is still decent enough to make a listener sit through the songs at the least.

Title song God Tussi Great Ho has a kind of music that one associates with Salman Khan. Quite an Indian feel (though sounding at least 3-4 years behind) the title song has Sonu Nigam thanking God (Amitabh Bachchan) for bestowing upon him all the powers which allow him to run the world in a way he wants. Shankar Mahadevan is the voice for Amitabh Bachchan in this situational song which should help in moving the story forward while keeping the audience engaged. Yet again, a ‘remix version’ follows. Well, as it turns out, it’s placement in the album is quite unnecessary due to the song’s situational theme!

Here comes the man Neeraj Sridhar who doesn’t seem to be setting a foot wrong ever since his association with Pritam has been paying dividends in each and every outing of his! He pairs up with Shreya Ghoshal for a romantic ballad titled ‘Tumko Dekha’ which is written by Jalees Sherwani. Just when one thought that Neeraj had changed his approach completely for the song by going all sober and romantic, he comes up his English rendition, hence putting his stamp over ‘Tumko Dekha’. The best song of the album so far, one is surprised what is taking the makers so long to be unleashing this one on the music channels?

This can probably be touted as one of the biggest landmark deals in the Indian Music industry, which has seen a resurgence over the past few months. According to reliable sources, music label major T-Series, run by music baron Bhushan Kumar, has acquired the music rights for 20 forthcoming films of UTV Motion Pictures at a whopping Rs. 27.50 crores, in what is arguably the biggest music deal in the industry.

Some of the major titles include Dilli 6 of Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra starring Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor at Rs. 5 crores, Main Aur Mrs Khanna starring Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor at Rs. 6 crores. It is learnt that two films starring Shahid Kapoor were closed at Rs. 3.5 crores each.

UTV Motion Pictures is one of India’s largest integrated film studios and has had a record year at the box office in the current year, with films like Jodhaa Akbar and the critically acclaimed Aamir in recent times. The studio had ventured into the music business by launching its own label UTV Music with Jodhaa Akbar, however, had Sony BMG distributing Aamir and with this partnership has possibly entered into a strategic relationship with the leader in the industry, T-Series.

Music has been an integral component of Bollywood not just in terms of content, but indeed in marketing of the film and getting an encouraging opening. When Bollywood Hungama contacted T-Series to confirm and ask if their marketing initiatives had resulted in this acquisition, they refused to comment. We will be tracking this alliance and will have more for you very soon.

Charged with criminal conspiracy, approver who turned hostile dies at 74

Over a decade after the underworld delivered a telling blow to Bollywood by gunning down music baron Gulshan Kumar outside a temple in Juhu on August 12, 1997, the case is floundering once again with the death of approver-turned-accused Mohammed Ali Shaikh. The Mumbai Police Crime Branch has based its case against gangster Abu Salem, music director Nadeem Saifee and now-acquitted TIPS industries owner Ramesh Taurani mostly on Shaikh’s statement.

An ailing Shaikh (74) died at his Ghatkopar residence on Sunday of natural causes.

According to the police, Shaikh was present at a meeting held between extradited gangster Abu Salem and Nadeem Saifee in Dubai in 1997, where the entire conspiracy was allegedly hatched. Earlier, the police had failed to prove the case in court after Shaikh turned hostile stating that he did not know Salem or Saifee. Shaikh was later re-arrested and made an accused. He would have been tried on charges of conspiring to kill Kumar.

Defence lawyer Subhash Kanse said Shaikh was a cardiac patient and a diabetic. “Even during the court hearings he was always accompanied by his wife to court. There have been instances when the court was about to issue warrants against him for non appearance in court but a lenient approach was taken considering his age and medical background,” Kanse said. Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria confirmed that Shaikh died after suffering from asthma and said the case against him would now be abated.

Senior lawyers acquainted with the case pointed out that in the earlier trial, a sessions court had convicted one assailant to life imprisonment, but dropped the conspiracy charges. Had Shaikh been found guilty of conspiracy, the involvement of others, including Abu Salem, could have been established.

Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said Shaikh was being tried for conspiracy. “But we also wanted to try him for additional charges of an approver turning hostile,” he added.

Shaikh was arrested along with 19 other accused in 1997, soon after the murder of Kumar. In custody, he agreed to turn approver, a prosecution witness who could depict the entire conspiracy theory and pin down all the accused. However, he later turned hostile and his trial was separated.

With Shaikh turning hostile, the prosecution’s case was considerably weakened.

The court acquitted 18 of the accused including TIPS Industries chief Ramesh Taurani. Only shooter Abdul Rauf Daud Merchant, identified in court, was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2002.

Action comedy Singh is Kinng looks to be heading straight for the record books after earning £7.34m in worldwide ticket sales last weekend - believed to be the highest return for a Bollywood film in history.

The film starring Askshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, is backed by The Indian Film Company (IFC), which owns the worldwide distribution rights and was released to 1,700 screens across India, USA, Canada, UAE and the UK.

Its success in the UK propelled it to 7th position in the UK TOP 10, an index which includes the latest Hollywood releases.

IFC may have also broken another record by selling the film’s music rights to Junglee Music, a division of the Times of India Group for a limited period in a £1.32m deal. This is thought to be a record breaking valuation for a film soundtrack in India.

Sandeep Bhargava, chief executive of the Investment Adviser to IFC, said: “We are delighted that Singh is Kinng has had a fantastic opening weekend. There was a great deal of interest in the film prior to its release and we are optimistic that the film will continue to achieve excellent box office returns over the course of the next few weeks.

“The success of Singh is Kinng underlines the ability of the IFC team to invest in quality productions and maximise revenues through extended distribution in order to create significant investor value.”
